Web 2.0 audience measurement demonstration

29 janvier 2008

The purpose of this page is to demonstrate how we measure the audience of a web 2.0 site.

audience

As a reminder, a web 2.0 site has one of the following two following characteristics:

  • visitors share information
  • the content of a page is refreshed piece by piece (Ajax technologies)

Time measurement

Time spent is the most important indicator of web 2.0. It replaces page views, which became meaningless when pages are refreshed piece by piece (Ajax)

Time is only taken into account when the script detects mouse-keyboard activity on the page. Time count is stopped ofter a certain idle time. In this demonstration, time is "stopped" after 10 seconds of idle time. In a normal configuration, the idle time is more important: one minute for instance for a "text" site, without video.

Stop to move your mouse (and don't touch your keyboard) during 10 seconds. The windows in the lower right corner does not refresh anymore!

Visibility measurement

Content visibility is also used to measure time. As soon as a content is not visible anymore, our script stops counting is time of display.

  • You can make the following experiment:
  • check the total time of the page (last line in the green rectangle)
  • switch to another application, or another tab on your navigator
  • count 10 seconds (this page must no longer be visible)
  • come back on this page and look at the total time: it did not change!

Content measurement

The demo rectangle shows the different contents that belong to the page. The url http://www.alenty.com/xwiki/bin/view/Demo/AudienceDemo corresponds to the article that you are currently reading, without the comments, which are considered as different contents. The comments are identified by their numbers (comment0, comment1, etc.).

Every second, our script knows if these comments are visible, and what their visible surface is. This allows us to know if and how long a comment has been seen by a visitor.

There are many usage for this measurement:

  • know if a banner has been seen
  • measure how long each product is seen in a search page
  • measure the fact that an article is read on the Home page of a blog (where, every day, the last articles are included)...
  • Scroll up and down this page and you will see the information of the visibility of the different contents will be updated!

Dynamic displays (Ajax)

Who's hot widget filtering is a typical Ajax functionality. When you move the cursor on the thermometer, comments are filtered according to the temperature of their author.

You will notice that the demo rectangle takes into account the comment filtering.

A generic script for all web 2.0 sites
